A small town with a big heart — and we're proud to be part of it.
Over Memorial Day weekend, The Hive hosted its very first pop-up event — and it went beautifully. Three incredible makers set up shop and brought the space to life. The Bog with Books brought their curated book selection. Charlie Waters filled the room with handmade pottery and paper-making. And a clothing pop-up brought one-of-a-kind pieces to Front Street. It was exactly the kind of thing we hoped this space could be.
The Hive on Front Street is a historic building with two sides, situated on Front Street in Thomas, WV — a city of around 600 people that punches well above its weight. Thomas has a thriving arts scene, a growing independent business scene, all kinds of outdoor recreation, and a community that genuinely looks out for each other. We feel lucky to be here.
The building is currently under renovation and evolving into something we're really excited about. One side is open for lodging now, while the other side is being renovated into an event and community space. This project has come together through many hands and many conversations, and we are grateful to everyone who has contributed their time, energy, and belief in what this place can become.
The Hive aims to give back to the community that has made Thomas such a special place. That means supporting local organizations, creating space for community events, and making sure that what we build here serves residents and visitors alike — not just today, but for years to come.
The Hive would not be where it is today without the support of Woodlands Development Group. Woodlands has been an invaluable partner — providing loans, business coaching, and technical assistance that have made this project possible.
Based in Elkins, WV, Woodlands has been building healthy, viable communities in North Central West Virginia since 1995. Through their lending arm, Woodlands Community Lenders, they provide access to capital and hands-on technical assistance to small businesses and nonprofits in Randolph, Barbour, and Tucker Counties — especially those who might not qualify through traditional lenders. If you're a small business owner or entrepreneur in Tucker County, we encourage you to reach out to them.
A thank you to Grant County Bank
We are also deeply grateful to Grant County Bank in Davis, WV for their support in making The Hive a reality. Grant County Bank is a true community bank — the kind that invests in people and places, not just numbers. Their belief in this project has meant everything, and we are proud to have them as a partner in what we are building here on Front Street.
In a town this small, everything is steps away — and that's the magic of it. Front Street is lined with remarkable small businesses run by people who have poured their hearts into this place. We are proud to be neighbors to all of them, and proud of every owner and employee who makes Thomas what it is.
Designed to serve visitors and the people who call Tucker County home.
Currently under renovation and growing — from lodging to events, bike rentals, and more.
Thomas may be small, but it draws people from everywhere — and we are here to be welcoming.
A thank you to our mayor and city council
Thomas is a small town, and keeping it running takes real dedication. A heartfelt thank you to our mayor and all of the city council members who give their time to serve this community. These are essentially elected volunteer positions — people who show up because they care about where they live. We are grateful for everything they do to keep Thomas going strong.
History, adventure, culture, and community — all tucked into the West Virginia highlands.
Thomas sits high in the Allegheny Mountains and has been drawing people for centuries. Lord Fairfax's surveyors first mapped the region in 1736, and a young George Washington returned to survey the land in 1746 — though the rugged terrain kept permanent settlers away for another 134 years. It wasn't until the arrival of the West Virginia Central and Pittsburg Railway on August 10, 1884, that the town's future was secured.
The railroad opened the door to the coal and timber industries, and workers flooded in from all over the world — Italian, Polish, Russian, Jewish, and Austrian immigrants all made Thomas their home. The town was incorporated in 1892 and grew to over 2,000 residents by 1920. Thomas was notably not a company-built town — the buildings you see today were investments made by the residents themselves.
In November 1901, a fire destroyed 83 buildings in just a few hours. Residents rebuilt in brick, and the Thomas Commercial Historic District — listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998 — still stands as testament to their resilience. Today, with a population of around 596, Thomas has reinvented itself as a hub for arts, music, and outdoor adventure, while holding onto its deep roots.
The Blackwater Canyon Half Marathon starts right on the rail trail below Front Street in Thomas and finishes in Parsons — a great reason to stay at The Hive the night before!
Tucker County is a paradise for serious outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you're casting a line, in the woods, or taking the back roads in a Jeep or UTV — there's plenty of wild, beautiful terrain to explore.
Thomas is proud to be one of 12 Mon Forest Towns — a regional partnership of communities connected by the Monongahela National Forest, working together to build a sustainable, recreation-based economy that benefits residents and visitors alike. Learn more at monforesttowns.org
